I never thought that I would become a doctor. I always wanted an occupation that would serve and help those around me. My undying fascination with the human body and experience, coupled with a general love for the sciences, led me into medicine. I followed my heart and interest.
I grew up in the Villages of Birch Grove and Harford in St. Andrews. I received my primary education at St. Matthew’s Roman Catholic school and my secondary education at Grenville Secondary School after which I went on to T. A. Marryshow Community College.
My first job after graduating from college was as a clerk in a law office. I considered becoming a lawyer but decided against it once I realized I had the wrong motive. My second job was as a teacher. I had studied teaching in college and had experiences as a Sunday School teacher in my local church. I enjoyed and stayed in teaching for four years then started feeling very dissatisfied, something was missing. There was a void. I felt that there must be something more that I can do for humanity, especially as I traveled throughout Grenada.
I decided to go back to school at the age of twenty-six to study medicine. I enrolled at St. Georges University where I received an undergraduate degree in Biology. I was then accepted into the Doctor of Medicine program. I graduated from that program with the class of 2019 and recently completed the one-year medical internship program at Grenada General Hospital. Medicine was a career that I had considered for a long time before I applied, as well as being fascinated by the intricacies of the human body. I was also excited by the prospect of lifelong learning and the ability to make a difference.
The human face of medicine is that sick and vulnerable patient who comes to you asking for help, or in such extremis, all you interact with is a broken body. The impact starts from the very basic. Being able to acknowledge the patient as an individual and giving them the opportunity to express their concerns about their life to an attentive ear. Just providing patients with an opportunity to speak and be heard is enormously empowering. Obviously, not all patient interactions result in lives being saved. Often, despite all our best efforts, a disease becomes terminal. As a doctor, I think it is an honor and a privilege to be given the opportunity to guide and support families through difficult emotions and uncertain times.
My plan is to seek specialty training in psychiatry which is underserved and underrepresented here in Grenada. Psychiatry is a medical specialty that involves the treatment of mental disorders. Psychiatrists are physicians who evaluate, diagnose and treat patients who are affected by a temporary or chronic mental health problem. Contrary to popular belief, psychiatrists don’t only treat people who are called “crazy” or “insane.” This is a misconception and a distortion of the truth because people who suffer from delusions or hallucinations form only a fraction of psychiatric patients. In fact, many people have borderline or temporary psychiatric conditions that may be effectively treated, resulting in full recovery of the patient.
Studies shows that one in four adults suffers from mental illness in any given year. While that is a sobering fact, the even more frightening issue is that there simply aren’t enough mental health resources to go around – meaning those who need help often fail to get it. It remains a stigmatized and “looked down upon” specialty but I’m accustomed to being ridicule and stigmatized.
The particular hill where I grew up in Birch Grove was called, “hungry hill”. It was a most unfitting name because everyone in that area did some form of farming so we always had food, livestock and various fruit trees. The name was given to scorn and ridicule us because we were poor with no titles to our names but I grew up seeing hard working people who tried their best to live good lives and managed their finances. Today, that hill where I grew up is now called, “Progress Hill” why? because progress is evident not only up that hill but in all the hills and communities around us.
It’s my hope and dream that Grenada can make progress in our understanding of the conversations surrounding mental health challenges. From the little boy with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder to the little grandma with Alzheimer’s disease.
As a Daughter of the Soil, I would like my contemporaries to know, once you know yourself, your God given abilities, talents and capabilities, live up to them. Never allow the low value or expectations placed on you by others to influence your mind and cause you to live down at the level they see you at. Take the responsibility to manifest every positive potential placed in you despite the odds and despite what anyone may think or not think of you.
