Born and raised in the Village of La. Fillette, Gloria Thomas attended St. Mary’s R.C. primary school. At her primary school she joined the Legion of Mary and was groomed into doing acts of charity and service to the elderly in the community. Every Monday at Legion of Mary meeting, members reported on their humanitarian work and Gloria always had a long report to give. After being successful with the Common Entrance Exams she entered St Joseph’s Convent where she actively participated in sports. On completing her secondary education, she returned to join the Staff of St. Mary’s R.C. school to give back to her community. As a teacher she was dedicated, punctual, and had her students’ best interest at heart. After a few years on the job, she was assigned to the Common Entrance class where the school saw a sharp rise in the passing rate of exams.
Subjects being taught for school leaving was piloted at St. Mary’s R.C. school. In the early to mid-80’s, she was assigned to teach science for the school leavers and obtained a 100% passing rate in that area for three consecutive years which was a great achievement for the school. This accomplishment in part was due to her involvement in rewriting the Science Curriculum for Primary Schools.
After serving in the teaching profession, Ms. Thomas joined the Ministry of Education in November 1987, in the Adult and Continuing Education Department. She was tasked with providing persons with a second chance to gain an education. Some in basic Literacy, some in Skills Areas and others in Continuing Education. The program at the time was centralized after the demise of the revolution. The Center for Popular Education (CPE) was renamed Continuing Education Program (CEP). Getting into the role as Coordinator for the parish of St. Andrews, was an assignment with very high expectation and so Ms. Thomas was able to decentralized the program within the parish taking the program into five rural communities, within the first six months of taking up the role. Her Boss was concerned by the speed of her planning and commitment and cautioned from time to time “I HOPE YOU ARE NOT BITING MORE THAN YOU CAN CHEW”. His fears were allayed when after one year, the Adult and Continuing Education program took off under her management.
As a life-long learner, she pursued studies in Adult Education at the School of Continuing Studies in Cave Hill Barbados from 1991 – 1993 and was awarded the most Valuable Participant Award. She was outstanding in Project writing and capture the 2nd place in outstanding project proposal. The said proposal was funded as a reward and the TAMCC received funds to execute the training project which she prepared.
Ms. Thomas took the decision to work with Truancy as she felt that if we have great attendance there will be little need for a Basic Literacy Adult Education program and so within a five-year period, the truancy rate decreased from 20% to 5% at the parish level. In her role as School Attendance Officer, she lobbied along with two other colleagues to get the revised Education Act to reflect the powers and role of the school attendance Officer so that persons in that assignment can be protected while doing their job. This, it is believed to be one of the most outstanding contribution made by Ms. Thomas to the field of Education.
In addition, through negotiations, the student assistance program came into existence. It started by assisting a few cases recommended by the School attendance Officers, then progressed to the ten most needy students in every school and later, it evolved into what is now known as SEED program. It started around a desk in the Ministry of Education discussing frustrations of School Attendance Officers in getting the Job done. This achievement was a very fulfilling and rewarding one for Ms. Thomas.
Ms Gloria Thomas was then asked to head the National Emergency Relief Organization in 1999 and during that tenure she was able to institute the National Disaster Awareness Week prior to the hurricane season. During that week, a number of awareness activities are conducted, radio quiz, exhibitions, radio and television programs, T-shirt sales with slogans, and the high point, the national primary school quiz which exists up to this day.
For the last 12 years of her career, she was assigned as a Counselor within the Student Support Services unit where she worked mainly with cases referred to her by her colleagues and provided Clinical supervision to her team.
Ms. Thomas prepared the Mentorship proposal for the Ministry of Education in 2008 and was part of the team that wrote the Social and Life skills program. She is a certified Parenting facilitator, having completed a course of study with Parenting Partners of Jamaica and was recognized as one of the most outstanding graduates from that course. She has conducted many parenting sessions for the Ministry of Social Development pro bono in communities especially at pre-natal clinics at: Mt. Riche, Paradise, BirchGrove, Paraclete and Grand Bras. She also addressed Parents and Teachers Associations on the topic of parenting in many of our schools throughout Grenada. She visited homes to share parenting tips and to get a sense of the students’ situation to better assist them. She was very resourceful and supportive to her team and knew what she wanted to see occur within the district where she was assigned.
She works well with young people and so they easily gravitate towards her. Teachers are of the view that she “spoils” students because she understands how they think and reason and is an advocate for them on many occasions.
On one occasion, she effected a citizen arrest of an alleged child sexual abuser and took him to Grenville police station, being so passionate about the welfare and protection of our children. She served on the Adoption Board for five years and made an invaluable contribution as she personally knew some of the individuals who were involved in the cases.
This Daughter of the Soil has an extensive and impressive resume. Ms. Thomas attained a BSc. in Social Work, an MBA with Project Management Concentration, an MSc. in Counseling Psychology, an Advance Certificate in Adult and Continuing Education. Certificates in Disaster Management, Parenting Facilitation, Gender and Sexuality, International Organization Management, Global Environmental Management and Climate Change Mitigation in Developing countries to name a few.
Keynote:
Ms. Thomas is a member of the Lions Club in St. Andrew for the past twenty-five years. LIONS Club is a humanitarian organization serving the Less fortunate in communities, empowering youth and protecting the environment. She served as president on two occasions and held all posts on the executive over the years. The only president of the club so far to be awarded by the International President for Club excellence. Ms. Thomas has served as Zone Chairman for the organization and the first Grenadian to be appointed as a Region Chairman giving her the responsibility of guiding the clubs in St Lucia, Barbados, Grenada, St.Vincent and Union Island.
