Jahmel Williams is a young farmer, born and raised in Clozier St. John’s Grenada. His parents Eric and Cleaver Willams are organic farmers who taught their son the importance of farming. Jahmel stated that we must get back to working the soil. Jahmel and his parents have been farming for over 3 decades. He told us that up there in Clozier has the best soil in the whole country. He credits the altitude and the volcanic nature of the soil which produces great crops. All of his produce are sold to local vendors and supermarkets right here in Grenada.

Jahmel plants and sells produce such as Okra, Sweet Potatoes, Carrots, Cabbage both White and Purple, Tannias, Tomatoes just to name a few of the veggies produced on his vast nourished, enriched soil.

Jahmel is not shy talking about farming and is very knowledgeable about the subject as anticipated. He gave us the Cliffs Notes version of the moon and the seasons. It’s in my bones he shouted. “First thing in the morning and last thing at night. It’s what I breathe, it’s what I eat. it’s my life man”. Jahmel believes that Grenadians have lost interest in growing and eating their own local foods. As a vegetarian, he admonishes the younger ones to abstain from fast food. He said that there’s a reason why they call it fast food and that’s because there’s no nutrients in it. It’s created fast and once eaten, it leaves your body just as fast he said jokingly.

This Son of the Soil sticks to his daily regiment. He gets up around 4 a.m on most mornings and starts his morning with a hot cup of water, some fruits and a “draw” before heading up to his farm. He loves being a Rasta. “Rasta has taught me about working the soil, the seasons and the times”. Jahmel is in great physical shape and proud of his diet. He said, “if Ras don’t grow it, Ras don’t eat it”.

It’s welcoming to see a brother still farming. Hoping this article can inspire others to do the same. We must revert to our roots. Farming is what we know and the government should make every effort to instill this in their citizens. We cannot rely on foreign foods. I do believe that we get the leftovers from them. Very poor quality even though it might look good. They would not give us their best. Remember that they see us as, Third World countries. In American the foods that’s in the poorer neighborhoods are vastly different to what’s in the upper-class so do you believe that they will give us their best? Our government look the other way or most likely even are bribed to give us their garbage or leftovers.

I feel great when you come across young people like myself twith such passion for Farming and nature.
Our country is bless, fertil soil and and great level rainfall for our rivers, lakes and waterfall to supply water to our farmers and other consumers. But on the othe hand there are persons out there with the love farming and they’re willing, but doesn’t have land available to them, and if they do these lands are not accessible.
I believe the Government and Citizens who own lands that can be cultivated and they’re doing nothing, just have these lands growing vines and become hideouts for criminal activities. Please lease these lands to the youths, it will do so much for the Country, the Government, Agriculture and mostly the youths.

I heard about this Grenadian website at our Christmas dinner and I’m proud to be a Grenadian.
We also have a few local music artists that can be featured here too.
Proud of you Jahmel. We need more farmers. COVID has shown our weaknesses and needs.
