Nowadays, the field of Sport is recommended for several reasons including health, recreation, and entertainment. This book focuses primarily on the history and the expansion of sports and sporting activities in the parish of St. John’s. The author Fitzgerald “Naka” Joseph presents the development of character and personality of the individual, and recognition of sports administrators and communities as a whole. Highlighted in this publication are two themes – The History of Sports in St. John’s and the Energy that Sports generates.
In addressing the history, the book covers the evolution of sporting activities in the parish of St. John’s recognizing outstanding sports personalities and sports administrators. Mr. Fitzgerald skillfully makes the connection between sports in the parish and the rest of the nations. This approach links the themes of the book as he moves the reader from a discussion on sports to one of interpretation of the achievements in sports, and the other endeavors in the parish of St. John’s.
In the second theme, Naka puts forward his theory for the achievements of the people of St. John’s in the field of sports. Notably, for the town of just over 8,000 inhabitants. Gouyave can proudly boast of having an Olympic Gold Medalist among its successes. He claims that there is an energy source, tangible and intangible, which drives the people of Gouyave, and sports is one of the expressions of that energy.
For the people of St. John’s, this book will provide nostalgia of the good old days, and indeed pave a path for the future involvement and analytical works on sports. In addition, it can be used as an example to review sports and sporting activities. Certainly, a sporting reference to keep in your library, this book can be read over and over again.

In his hometown Gouyave, his influence can be felt in all sporting activities be it Football, Netball, Chess, Karate or Basketball. Naka has spent tremendous time and money in developing himself to be one of the premier basketball coaches in the Caribbean.
